Are you a budding Anya Hindmarch, Vivienne Westwood or Stella McCartney? Do you fancy having one of your designs sported by shoppers across NI every day? If so, Dale Farm, the company whose locally produced dairy products feature at the top of shopping lists and in the shopping bags of NI consumers every day, wants to hear from you to help create the first ever ‘Dale Farm Bag for Life’.
Announced at the 2008 Balmoral Show, the unique, eco-focused creative challenge sees Dale Farm invite the public to come up with a bespoke design that will form the basis of its ‘Bag for Life. Would-be designers, of all ages, are asked to take their inspiration from environmental and dairy related themes before taking their creative talents to the limit and developing a design worthy of a top designer. Classical or radical, all interpretations will be welcomed. The winning design will go on to be reproduced onto 1000 large shopping bags, made from environmentally sustainable jute. These will be distributed widely to the public and well-known local fashionistas, media, and political representatives, ensuring that they are soon spotted all over the province.
“Dale Farm is the biggest dairy company in NI and our products are made from 100% locally produced milk from Northern Ireland farms, which means that their local provenance and in turn their environmental credentials are very strong,” said Brian Beattie, Head of Marketing at Dale Farm. “It makes good sense for us to create a ‘Dale Farm Bag for Life’ to give shoppers a very locally-inspired alternative to plastic bags. By engaging the public in the initiative, we hope it will give them positive ownership of the end result and be more inclined to use the bags as a result!”
To launch the initiative and provide ‘bags’ of inspiration, Dale Farm hosted a special ‘work of art’ demonstration at its stand at the Balmoral Show, with creative expert Rosaleen Martin holding hourly workshops demonstrating design techniques and a full range of media from drawing and painting to sewing and mono-printing. Visitors were able to examine the wonderful Dale Farm designs that she had ‘made earlier’ and also watch her create completely new ideas before their eyes, working to the environmental and dairying themes as the challenge requires, and incorporating the Dale Farm brand colours of white, blue and green.
